FLYT: Acoustic ambient world music

FLYT means flow in Norwegian. It is my musical way of acknowledging that sometimes we find ourselves in situation where we get a certain added energy in our endeavours that adds to our own effort and creates a greater impact. FLYT is looking for this by involving musicians and asking them to contribute with their own unique language and emotions in an ambient musical setting.

In august of 2016 I travelled to Rumania, Serbia and Turkey, recording musicians in these places. I chose this area because of the journeys that the vikings made in Eastern Europe and Russia/ Ukraine but also because of the journeys I have made personally as a composer over the years. When I returned to Sweden, I invited folk Swedish folk musicians to my studio to record in a similar fashion. These recording have now been made into an album with two more to be made at a later stage. I label the music I have made viking music. I want to be inspired by smaller musical settings from a era where art music was not as different from folk music as it is today. However, I do not want or need it to be authentic as in sounding the same. I am more interested in processes and cultural meeting points. My music is inspired by the vikings but not a relic of the past. For me it is a pathway to the future.

FLYT is a concept concert with strong visual identity where audience and musicians can meet and interact as they explore their own musicality and traditions within specific framework. This framework consists of a simple melodi, a musical backdrop and certain ways of performing. I am looking for intimacy, minimalism and honesty as the musicians perform the melodies and improvise based on these. I am looking for musicians that are rooted in their traditions but are able to venture into other realms as well. The framework is flexible enough to incorporate a varying number of musicians as well a different musical traditions.

The word FLYT can be used in the same way as FLOW in English, that you get more energy out of a process than what you put it. You touch on something other that gives you a push, and receive more than what you asked for.

The latest installment of FLYT was recorded in Kyiv autumn of 2021, inspired by the history and future and heart of Ukraine. Paintings by Polina Kuznetsova, animations by Vova Denysenko duduk and percussion by Armen Kostandyan, song by @Goligoli Yaryna Sizyk bandura by Ярослав Джусь, flutes by Jamagidze Tamaz clarinet by Mitya Gerasimov.
